DESCRIPTION:The marine invasive species work programme of the National Biodiversity Data Centre\, in collaboration with CEDaR are hosting three marine non-indigenous and invasive species identification training courses across Ireland to address a gap marine invasive species recording. These courses are funded by the Department of Climate\, Energy and the Environment and CEDaR.  \nThe courses will run over 2 consecutive days and will be delivered by Dr Arjan Gittenberger of GiMaRIS\, a global specialist in the field. Each course will consist of classroom/lab workshop-style learning and some time in the field. \nThis is a closed training event. SUMMARY:Workshop: Community Invasive Species Training - North Bull Island\, Dublin
DESCRIPTION:Learn to identify\, map\, and prevent invasive species on North Bull Island. Hands‑on training for community action. \n\n\n\n\nAs part of Invasive Species Week\, join us on North Bull Island for a hands‑on workshop designed to build practical skills in identifying\, mapping\, and preventing the spread of invasive species. This session is ideal for volunteers\, local community groups and anyone interested in protecting local biodiversity. Refreshments will be available throughout the day. \nWhat you’ll learn\n\nInvasive species identification — Learn how to recognise high‑risk invasive plants and animals commonly found in coastal and dune habitats.\nInvasive species mapping — Get practical experience recording sightings using simple field methods and citizen‑science tools.\nPreventing the spread: Check\, Clean\, Dry — Understand how invasive species move between sites and learn the essential steps to stop their spread.\n\nWhy this workshop matters\nNorth Bull Island is a unique and sensitive ecosystem. Invasive species threaten native wildlife\, habitats\, and the ecological balance of the area. By learning how to identify\, map\, and prevent their spread\, you’ll be contributing directly to conservation efforts on a UNESCO Biosphere site. \nWho’s involved\nThis workshop is delivered in collaboration with the National Biodiversity Data Centre\, Clean Coasts\, Dublin Bay Biosphere and Dublin City Council. \nWho should attend\nEveryone is welcome! No prior experience required. Perfect for community volunteers\, students\, outdoor enthusiasts\, and anyone who wants to take meaningful action for biodiversity. \n\n\n  \nInvasive Species Workshop Poster

SUMMARY:Webinar: Using citizen science to prevent future spread of invasive non-native plants
DESCRIPTION:Invasive non-native species harm the environment\, the economy\, our health\, and the way we live. Many of the non-native species found in the wild in Great Britain are plants\, and most were originally introduced for use in gardens. Join this webinar with Coventry University to learn more about the citizen science project Plant Alert (www.plantalert.org) led by the university in collaboration with the Botanical Society for Britain and Ireland. To date\, more than 1\,000 records have been submitted by gardeners and results are used to identify potential invasive plant species of the future and prevent their spread. \nRegister for free at the link below.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Asian Hornets: Spot the threat\, protect our pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Ann Haigh\, an Invasive Species Officer from the National Biodiversity Data Centre\, joins the Irish Wildlife Trust for an informative and engaging webinar on the invasive Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina) and what it means for Ireland. \nThis presentation will introduce the Asian hornet\, outlining relevant biology\, and the threat it poses to Irish pollinators and biodiversity. Ann will cover the history of the Asian Hornet here\, what occurred during the 2025 incursion and what the plans are to protect Ireland in future. \nLearn what actions you can take\, particularly how to identify the Asian Hornet and distinguish it from valuable native species. Our native insects continue to decline\, and it is critical to avoid further harm to them while seeking to keep Ireland free of this invasive species. Ann will demonstrate how to report sightings via the Asian Hornet Reporter. With systems in place to eradicate nests\, the public’s help in correctly identifying and reporting the Asian hornet is the single most important factor in responding to this species. \nRegister for free at the link below.
