SUMMARY:Training: Marine Non-indigenous and Invasive Species Identification (Dun Laoghaire\, Co. Dublin)
DESCRIPTION:The marine invasive species work programme of the National Biodiversity Data Centre\, in collaboration with CEDaR are hosting three marine non-indigenous and invasive species identification training courses across Ireland to address a gap marine invasive species recording. These courses are funded by the Department of Climate\, Energy and the Environment and CEDaR.  \nThe courses will run over 2 consecutive days and will be delivered by Dr Arjan Gittenberger of GiMaRIS\, a global specialist in the field. Each course will consist of classroom/lab workshop-style learning and some time in the field. \nThis is a closed training event. You’ll learn why these grasslands are of national importance and about the rare species which live in them. SUMMARY:Invasive Species Walk & 'Balsam Bashing' - Monaghan
DESCRIPTION:Training for the Prevention and Management of Invasive Species – Class Field Trip! \nFollowing the 5-week Invasive Species Management Training Course we delivered in Bailieborough and Cavan town over the past 5 weeks\, Flynn Furney will be hosting the final class field trip! This event is open ONLY to course participants. \nThis event will take place in Rossmore Forest Park\, Monaghan on Sat 27th June\, 11am – 1pm\, followed by a free lunch! Meeting point is in the main car park and we will aim to start promptly at 11am. We will be walking some of the forest trails here to chat about the many invasive species present and previous invasive removal projects we have worked on. We will also do some ‘Balsam Bashing’ to help remove some invasive Himalyan Balsam on site! \nPlease dress for the weather on the day and wear sturdy footwear. SUMMARY:Cherry Laurel Community Information Day - Clare
DESCRIPTION:We are inviting members of the public to join for a community day on Saturday\, 27th June as part of Invasive Species Week 2026. For the past 3 years\, with the help of volunteers\, we’ve been working to remove invasive Cherry Laurel along the river and planted over 4\,000 native saplings in its place. We will be speaking on our methodology and approach for removing this invasive species from The Glen. Cherry Laurel is one of Ireland’s most problematic invasive plant species. It spreads rapidly\, creating dense shade that suppresses native plants\, reduces biodiversity\, and prevents the natural regeneration of woodlands.

DESCRIPTION:Join Ann Haigh\, Invasive Species Officer at the National Biodiversity Data Centre\, for an engaging and hands‑on Asian Hornet Talk and Identification Workshop that will give you the confidence to spot and report this high‑risk invasive insect. \nWith Ireland’s freedom from Asian hornet depending entirely on early detection\, learning how to recognise it and\, just as importantly\, how to rule out common look‑alikes has never been more vital. Native to Southeast Asia\, the Asian hornet has spread across continental Europe and poses significant ecological risk. This invasive species preys on native pollinators\, and its nests can devastate honeybee populations. Management efforts have so far prevented its establishment\, making ongoing public reporting and early detection particularly crucial \nThis session features a short lively talk\, clear identification tips\, real specimens\, and a fun quiz to help demystify hornets\, wasps\, bees\, and flies. Ample time will be provided for questions and practical advice on photographing insects with your phone. DESCRIPTION:We invite all to join us on a Himalayan Balsam Bash for National Invasives Week! Meet us at 2pm at Lidl Car Park (no parking at the site). Wear long sleeves (there could be nettles next to the Balsam); boots and dress for the weather. Gloves and training will be provided. Himalayan Balsam is an alien invasive species impacting on the river bank of the River Lee in Tralee. We need to remove it before it goes to seed. This event will take 1.5-2 hours

DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning author Eoghan Daltun for a guided walk of Esk Mountain Nature Restoration Project followed by a fireside talk about his own experiences of invasive species.  In particular Rhododendron ponticum\, Sika deer & feral goats.  He will speak about his work in removing them & restoring life to his family’s 73-acre farm near Eyeries on the Beara Peninsula\, West Cork.  Continue the conversations with Eoghan over a special two-course fireside dinner themed around ‘Eating Invasive Species’ which will include Sika Deer & a selection of responsibly removed invasive plant species on the menu. \n  \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nEoghan Daltun is a sculpture conservator\, a High Nature Value farmer and\, above all\, a rewilder. Originally from Dublin\, since 2009 he has lived with his two sons\, Liam and Seánie\, on their 73-acre farm near Eyeries on the Beara Peninsula\, West Cork.  He is author of the best-selling and award-winning book\, An Irish Atlantic Rainforest: A Personal Journey into the Magic of Rewilding (Hachette\, September 2022)\, and The Magic of an Irish Rainforest: A Visual Journey (Hachette\, September 2024).
