Ann will cover the history of the Asian Hornet here\, what occurred during the 2025 incursion and what the plans are to protect Ireland in future. \nLearn what actions you can take\, particularly how to identify the Asian Hornet and distinguish it from valuable native species. Our native insects continue to decline\, and it is critical to avoid further harm to them while seeking to keep Ireland free of this invasive species. Ann will demonstrate how to report sightings via the Asian Hornet Reporter. Native to Southeast Asia\, the Asian hornet has spread across continental Europe and poses significant ecological risk. This invasive species preys on native pollinators\, and its nests can devastate honeybee populations. Management efforts have so far prevented its establishment\, making ongoing public reporting and early detection particularly crucial \nThis session features a short lively talk\, clear identification tips\, real specimens\, and a fun quiz to help demystify hornets\, wasps\, bees\, and flies. Ample time will be provided for questions and practical advice on photographing insects with your phone. SUMMARY:Volunteer with Killarney Mountain Meitheal
DESCRIPTION:Join Killarney Mountain Meitheal for a hands-on volunteering session to tackle Rhododendron in Killarney National Park. \nClearing mature Rhododendron ponticum is only part of the process in restoring the native forest. To support full recovery of the native forest floor\, cleared areas need to be revisited over subsequent seasons to remove emerging seedlings before they establish and spread. Removing these small shoots helps ensure that previous clearance efforts are maintained and that native habitats have the best chance to recover. This work plays an important role in protecting Killarney’s biodiversity. \n\nVolunteers are needed to assist with this lighter\, “gardening-style” follow-up work.  It offers an accessible way to get involved with the Meitheal\, particularly for those who prefer a quieter\, less physically demanding pace. \nNo prior experience is needed—just bring sturdy footwear\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and a willingness to get stuck in. SUMMARY:Training: Marine Non-indigenous and Invasive Species Identification (Galway)
DESCRIPTION:The marine invasive species work programme of the National Biodiversity Data Centre\, in collaboration with CEDaR are hosting three marine non-indigenous and invasive species identification training courses across Ireland to address a gap marine invasive species recording. These courses are funded by the Department of Climate\, Energy and the Environment and CEDaR.  \nThe courses will run over 2 consecutive days and will be delivered by Dr Arjan Gittenberger of GiMaRIS\, a global specialist in the field. Each course will consist of classroom/lab workshop-style learning and some time in the field. \nThis is a closed training event.
