Join us for an informative day exploring Aquatic Invasive Species and learn how they impact our rivers, lakes, and local ecosystems.

Schedule

6:00 pm – 7:30 pm | Aquatic Invasive Species Exhibition and Talk

  • Introduction to some of Ireland’s most significant aquatic invasive species affecting rivers and lakes.
  • Live displays of invasive aquatic species alongside native aquatic invertebrates, allowing participants to compare key features and ecological roles.
  • Opportunity to view specimens up close using microscopes and learn how to identify common invasive and native freshwater specicies.
  • Short illustrated talk covering:
  1. What invasive species are and how they spread.
  2. Their ecological, economic, and environmental impacts.
  3. Examples of invasive species control programmes and conservation successes in Ireland.

7:30 pm – 8:30 pm | Live Demonstration: Controlling Himalayan Balsam

  • Practical field demonstration on the banks of the River Liffey.
  • Identification of Himalayan balsam and its impacts on riverbank habitats and biodiversity.
  • Guidance on best-practice control methods, including safe hand-pulling techniques and biosecurity measures.
  • Opportunity for questions and discussion with event facilitators.

This event is suitable for members of the public, community groups, anglers, students, and anyone interested in protecting Ireland’s freshwater ecosystems.

  • Dr. Jan-Robert Baars. Lecturer and research scientist at the School of Biology and Environmental Science, University College Dublin.
  • Ethan Bannon. Research Assistant and Junior Ecologist at AQUENS Ltd., based in Dublin, Ireland, specialising in freshwater and aquatic ecology.
